Chavalekayi Kadale Kalu Palya (Cluster beans Veggie with Chickpeas)

I brought you a very tasty and healthy Chavale kayi recipe. Cluster beans is known as “Chavalekayi” and chickpeas are known as “Kadale kalu” in Kannada (One of South Indian languages). Cluster beans are consumed like any other green beans. It is one of the healthiest vegetables and it has got a wonderful flavour. In North Karnataka region, everyone loves dishes made of cluster beans. My mother used to cook cluster beans in a simple way. I started cooking it in different ways which are healthy and tasty as well. I started including it in our regular diet because of it’s nutritional values which include it’s richness in dietary fibre and most interestingly, it’s contribution in managing weight. Let’s see how to prepare Chavale Kayi Kadale kalu palya.

INGREDIENTS

  • Cluster beans – 250 grams (This quantity is for 4 people)
  • Chick peas/Kadale kalu – 50 grams (I am using Kabuli chana, you can replace it with brown chana)
  • Tomatoes – 2 (Medium size)
  • Salt – 11/2 Tea spoon
  • Sugar – 1/4 sugar
  • Dry coconut powder or fresh grated coconut – 2-3 tea spoons
  • Coriander seeds powder (Dhaniya powder) – 1 Tea spoon
  • Cumin seeds powder (Jeera powder) – 1

INGREDIENTS FOR SEASONING

  • Cooking oil – 2 Tea spoon
  • Mustard seeds -1/4 Tea spoon
  • Cumin seeds – 1 Tea spoon
  • Green chillies – 4 (according to your taste)
  • Curry Leaves – 2 Strings
  • Turmeric powder -1/4 Tea spoon
  • Asafoetida – 1 pinch

PREPARATION

Wash kabuli chana with plane water and soak them with sufficient water over night. Drain water from soaked chana. Pour soaked chickpeas into a pressure cooker (capacity of 2 or 3 litres). Add one cup of water, one tea spoon of salt and a pinch of sugar. Close the pressure cooker and keep it on medium flame. Allow it to whistle thrice and takeout the pressure cooker from heat. Let the pressure come down, it may take 5-10 minutes. Meanwhile you can prepare other things.

Wash and clean cluster beans. Remove the ends of beans ( tip and tail) with fingers so that strings will come out. Cut them into small pieces and place them in a bowl.

Wash and clean tomatoes. Chop them into small pieces and keep separately in a bowl.

Wash and clean green chillies. Make fine paste of it and keep it in a bowl.

Place a frying pan (medium one) on medium heat, pour oil in it and wait until it gets heated, it may take a minute. Add mustard seeds and wait until it get spluttered completely, add cumin seeds, hing (asafoetida), curry leaves, green chilly paste and turmeric powder, one after the other and toss them slightly. Add chopped cluster beans, half tea spoon salt and a pinch of sugar, toss it thoroughly, close the pan with lid, allow it to cook for 5-10 minutes on low heat. Open the lid and check it, if beans are not softened, cook it further for 5 minutes.

Open the lid add chopped tomatoes to it, toss it thoroughly, close the pan and allow it to cook further for 5 minutes.

Open the pressure cooker, pour cooked kabuli chana along with its water to the pan. Add Coconut powder, Dhanya powder, Jeera powder to it, mix it well and allow it to cook (Boil) for 5-10 minutes.

Healthy and tasty Chavali kayi Kadale kalu palya is ready to serve. You can serve it with rotis, chapatis, or rice.
